Re: Beta Testers Wanted

Post by MainTrane »

The developer of XMBC is Phil, I'm just a dedicated user and beta tester. It is a free tool made by one individual and distributed to assist others.
I've used programs such as KatMouse and WizMouse in the past and have decided to stick with XMBC. The 2 mentioned are very simple programs, focusing on a single functionality. XMBC's uses are much more varied and detailed. If all you want is one specific function, then you are free to use any other program to suit your needs.

To be honest gate1975mlm, it just seems as if you lack an understanding of some of the advanced settings. Claiming a bug is at fault every time you encounter an issue is not a method prone to make assisting you any easier. Until you understand what the various settings actually do, I'd recommend that you stop referring to everything you encounter as a bug.

This thread is intended for feedback in regards to the latest beta. If you need further assistance with general usage issues create a new thread asking for help.
Be sure to read the following threads before posting: Before you ask for help...., New Users & Posting Rules, FAQs

thanks,

Ok sorry to be a nag but I have one last update on this issue! I hope :)

Katmouse also stopped working so forget what I said about Katmouse working and XMBC not working.

But good news I finally figured out what was going on here.

I use a program called "Actual Window Manager" and when I disabled it XMBC started working perfect. Infact I do not even need to use the "Advanced Window Scrolling" feature. All I did was change the top scroll line to 1 next to where it says "Lines to scroll using the scroll wheel" and its working as I want it too :)

So I will contact "Actual Window Manager" and see if they know what is interfering with line scrolling.

:) I also use Actual Window Manager and encountered some problems when they added their own scrolling abilities. I believe I was using WizMouse at the time (having 2 different programs trying to do the exact same thing simultaneously will always lead to problems).

In regards to your hanging issues, enable debug logging from the advanced settings dialog. You can also assign a global hotkey to enable/disable debug mode. Your mouse will become less responsive in debug mode, but that's to be expected. Post the results of your debug log to this thread along with the required information as detailed by the linked threads from my last post. Please, be thorough and make sure there are no other programs interfering with XMBC.

Thanks,
MainTrane

OK so I had a week off, in the hopes no significant problems would be found. Of course, I found a few minor issues, and it seems there are some conflicts with certain other applications (see above) - but its looking pretty good - maybe almost ready for release.

Thanks for everyone's help & feedback so far.

Yes XMBC 1.53.12 Beta is looking very good! :)

I have not even seen XMBC crashing since making a rule in "Actual Window Manager" for iTunes not to use "Scrol inactive windows with the mouse wheel"

Apparently Actual Window Managers "Scrol inactive windows with the mouse wheel" feature conflicts with programs that are added to XMBC. Which then casues XMBC to crash and also breaks the "Change Scroll Line" feature in XMBC.

I'm concerned about the crash you refer to but I cant seem to recreate it here which means the chances of fixing it are near zero. I agree that running two programs that do the same thing is perhaps a little over the top, but it should not cause XMBC to crash, the worst I would expect is it not to scroll as expected!

If you could provide enough info to recreate I would appreciate it. I havn't used AWM before (just installed the trial to test this but no crash yet). Does it only crash when used with iTunes or do other apps suffer in the same way? I really don't want to have to install iTunes lol.

Thanks,
Phil

What I will do is remove the rule for iTunes from Actual Window Manager and see if I can make XMBC crash again.

Not really sure if other programs also make it crash.

Heck who knows maybe the crashing was just becasue my computer has become so bloated from tesing so many kinds of software :)

Ok I have been testing this for the last 10 minutes or so and I just can not get it to crash at all.

So I am willing to bet it was just my computer being bloated and slow.

I think its safe to say that XMBC will not crash on a clean working computer. :)

But one thing I do know for sure is Actual Window Managers "Scroll inactive windows with the mouse wheel" feature will not allow you to change Scroll Lines with XMBC at all.

"Scroll inactive windows with the mouse wheel" must be disabled in order to make changes to scroll lines from XMBC.

So for example if someone is using both Actual Window Managers and XMBC and they want to make a change to "Windows Explorer" scroll lines they will have to disable "Scroll inactive windows with the mouse wheel" in AWM. And then they can change the scroll lines in XMBC and then re enable "Scroll inactive windows with the mouse wheel" after the change was maid with XMBC.

However for some programs like iTunes "Scroll inactive windows with the mouse wheel" always has to be disabled or the change in scroll lines from XMBC will have no affect at all.

Luckly AWM has "Rules" for each application :)

As stated in an earlier post, I also use AWM. I can't even get that setting to interfere with XMBC's scrolling in any way. It's odd because I would fully expect it to cause some kind of trouble. As a matter of fact I remember it doing so when AWM first implemented the feature, but that only resulted in bouncing when the end of scrolling was reached. Likely due to 2 scroll messages being sent simultaneously.

Anyway, just adding my feedback that crashes aren't being experienced with these two programs. At least not easily reproduced.

I have updated the beta link in the first post once again. 1.53.14.
I hope this will be the last update before the next release.

It fixes a few minor issues found during testing, and adds a new option to reset sticky buttons on any other button press (for KHold).

Thanks for all you help so far.

I have updated the beta link in the first post once again. 1.53.15.
Clearly I should stop hoping that this is the final beta :?

It fixes a few more issues found during testing.
It also now includes a new user guide created by MainTrane - this is why the file size has increased by about 1Mb!

Thanks,
Phil

OK This is it. Final beta time.

I have updated the beta link in the first post once again. 1.53.16.
All being good, this version will become v2.0 later today or tomorrow - but here is the sneak-peek.

Thanks,
Phil

More information please :)
Be sure to read the following threads before posting: Before you ask for help...., New Users & Posting Rules, FAQs

Most importantly post your XMBC log, found in %APPDATA% directory. It doesn't sound like you'll be able to enter debug mode unless you have already assigned a hotkey to enable/disable debugging.
