XMBC Icon

Post by phil »

OK several people have complained about the XMBC Icon - and I can see their point. But I need to find out what the general feeling is. Do you want a new icon, want the ability to change the icons easily or are you so used to the old icon, you'd rather it wasn't changed?

For example the new icons options as as follows:

New icons by Pavel (I did the layer/disabled)
new1.png
newlayer2.png
newdisabled.png

New icons by Pavel

m2.png
mdisabled.png
New icons by Can4e3
(see below for a better representation of how these will look at the proper 16x16 size)

Bear in mind that all the icons will be displayed 16x16 in the system tray - some up there are 32x32 so may look better at the right size!

Thanks,
Phil

Thanks :)

Yes I know it does not suport bigger icons - the system tray does not either so not a lot of point! Most of the icons I posted 32x32 because thats the only size I have in the editor - windows auto-scales them to fit.

Anyway I still havnt looked into makeing it more customisable but I've had great feedback on the icons I have put in the beta (which are not your ones but the ones in the first example (poll no. 2).

Don't worry, I haven't yet decided on the outcome - I really would like to offer all three options but Im not sure the best way of doing that yet.

Thanks,
Phil

I'm not worry. Just think, that your should show to users icons on its original (16x16) size (resize).
32x32 may have bad scaling artifacts.

I gave my vote, and now my 2 cents:

based on "token" iconset
win7 clean toolbar icons (black=disabled, grey=enabled), no numbers, 16x16
(i think xmbc can handle also 24x24, i can see that icons into the .exe)

I think Im going to have to support the ability of loading an icon pack of some sort - maybe as simple as loading icons form files in the app folder if they exist. That way anyone can use whatever icons they like.

I will see if there is something quick, easy and effective I can do :)

how it increases the consumption of resources or decrease the responsiveness of the program?
i can change the icons by "resourcer", directly in the xmbc.exe, maybe you can put in the package resourcer & xmbc and change icons with a batch patch.

else without 3rd part software i think you can call an external special .ico file, that ico must contain the 5 icons to 16x16 (or 10 counting those 24x24), but i don't know xml++ (if it is similar to AutoHotkey script should be possible)

Loading icons from a file will not make any difference to the performance - it will be done once. And it wont increase memory usage because the icons are already loaded from the resources, so it makes no diff if they are loaded from somewhere else.

So thats not a worry.

BTW: What is this xml++ you mention?

Tested, and working - and it does not stop you using resourcer either - just an easier way for the general user to customize icons and does not require patching the exe (which I don't like for various other reasons).

I voted for #2, but would like it better without the digits for layer #. In other words keep the grey X, for X-Mouse :D , on the base of the mouse and add another green dot for each layer greater than the first.

Interesting idea.
I've already got the ability to load icons dynamically so customising it will be easier - I will see how the green dot plays out though - that might work very well :)

X-Mouse Executable Icons

My contribution: Image <--

Just a rough mock-up design I threw together based on Logitech's mice (my MX1100 to be specific).
My Photoshop skills are very very raw :hide: , hope to improve on this design.

The link contains an icon file in several different sizes from 16px - 256px [right-click and save].

EDIT: Couldn't figure out how to attach the file like in the posts above.

UPDATE: Image <-- I don't think this version would work too well in the systray, but it's a decent icon for the executable.
Image

UPDATE2: OK, --> Image <-- Right-Click and save as .ico image.

Urm its either 10 or 15. I've had soo many spam bots register and post naughty images in the last few weeks I had to increase it - sorry! I suppose I could manually move you out of the new users group - then it will allow you to post images immediately :)

Edit: Consider that done - you should be able to post images now.
