How long have you used XMBC?: Brand new user
What language and keyboard layout do you use in Windows?: English UK
My Evoluent software that I had been using for about 10 years seems to have been broken by the current Windows 11 version and all recommended fix steps have been taken, to no avail.
I am here seeking a workaround to try and get as close to original functionality as possible.
I gather that the lower thumb button is not possible to configure so I want to try and use the upper thumb button to perform two roles if possible.
Normally the lower thumb button when clicked and held will engage the secondary function of the other buttons on the mouse.
I am trying to move this lower thumb button function to the upper thumb button but I would like to still have the primary upper thumb button functionality if both functions can be implemented using XMBC
Is it possible to have the upper thumb button trigger a simulated key action with the normal click and release action AND if held but not released, to engage the second layer function which would be followed by my clicking one of the other mouse buttons to activate a different simulated key action to the primary (Layer 1) assigned function. Or is it the case that I can have only one or the other but not both?
This is a brand new work machine for 3D modelling and I have temporary admin access to set up my system software. I will have to figure out a workaround in the next few days before my machine will be reverted to non admin access and I will have to make do with whatever I have up and running at that point.
Thanks

Yes it should be... Choose "Button Held" for the upper thumb button...ctasker wrote: Sun Jan 18, 2026 12:16 am Is it possible to have the upper thumb button trigger a simulated key action with the normal click and release action AND if held but not released, to engage the second layer function which would be followed by my clicking one of the other mouse buttons to activate a different simulated key action to the primary (Layer 1) assigned function. Set the "normal click" to the upper thumb button (if not already by default)
Tick the first "Held for" and adjust the time period if required, then select what ever you want it to do... eg. simulated keys.
You might also want to play with the abort options (like abort if the mouse moves)... that depends on your usecase.

Re: Help figuring out functionality
Thanks for the reply Phil
I think Windows Enterprise current update version seems to have compatibility issues with XMBC too!
I had spent some time trying to figure out how to set up XMBC and felt like I was starting to get the hang of the interface
but when I went into my 3Ds Max application to give it a test run I found a lot of issues and unpredictable behaviours.
First off, my scroll wheel press to bring up the Pan viewport tool no longer worked, I could scroll/zoom in and out as normal but no more pan :/
The next thing was that the attempt to get my dual functionality for the upper thumb button seemed like it was getting stuck on the second layer, I couldn't seem to get it to revert back to layer 1.
So I tried to simplify things and just have one function on the upper thumb button which was the direct Layer 2 function (not using a simulated keys expression) but even this was not reverting for me.
I tried a number of changes and it seemed like occasionally it would communicate to max to engage the secondary function and other times it would have no effect. It still seemed to be getting stuck on Layer 2 even with the more straightforward thumb button assignment.
Then I tried changing which commands the various assignments would activate and I noticed that even though I was saving the updated changes each time before testing, It didn't seem to be sending an updated action, it was like it was stuck on the previous assignment.
In the end I figured I would go back to my old Evoluent software and just make peace with the fact that I have lost 4 of the button shortcuts that I had been using every day. At least it was operating consistently with the remaining buttons.
Have you had anyone else finding issues with recent updates of Windows 11 Enterprise? My software had no issues on my previous work machine which is also Windows 11 Enterprise but it was version 10.0.26200.
Perplexing and frustrating.

Re: Help figuring out functionality
I have not had any reports of such behaviors (that I can remember). It might be worth trying the latest beta though (as its almost 3 years newer that 2.20.5!
Could you give the version number for the "latest version" as I'm running 26100.7623 (24H2) on this laptop (and I think newer on my desktop & surface pro) but I'm not sure how much newer. I will say that my usage is pretty simple so it wouldn't surprise me all that much if I hadn't noticed (I don't even tend to use layers myself!)
