Random Crash has caused XMBC to stop working

Post by volgrim »

Hello,

XMBC Version: 2.20.1
Installed or Portable version: Installed version
Windows Version: Windows 10 x64
Mouse Information (brand/model): CoolerMaster Devastator 3
Relevant Computer Information (CPU, RAM etc): AMD Ryzen 5 1400 Quad-Core Processor- RAM 16 GB
Did the problem occur after an upgrade of XMBC? (If so, from what version?): Don't believe it is version related since it still occurs after I downgraded to 2.19
Did the problem occur after a Windows update/upgrade? (If so, from what version?): No, just after a crash.
How long have you used XMBC?: Since 2018.
What language and keyboard layout do you use in Windows?: English

Clear description of the problem:
Recently my computer suffered a crash cause I had too many chrome tabs open and ever since, my XMBC crashes randomly after a while but I can personally get it to crash if I click on the check for updates button. I've tried downgrading, going with a fresh install on another drive, nothing seems to work so I'm at a loss. If a log is required please let me know how I can provide it.

Re: Random Crash has caused XMBC to stop working

Post by phil »

When it crashes, does it generate the "Crash report" dialog? If so, have you sent the crash report?
If it does not generate the crash report dialog them something is very odd.
Is this new in today's 2.20.1 or did it happen in 2.20 as well?

The normal log is useless here, the debug log may be of interest (turn on debug logging and then make it crash).
I'm away now for much of the weekend but will try and have a look when I can!

Thank you for the quick reply and I wish you a great weekend.
No it just offers me the option to "close the program" (i just hit enter cause the PC goes into super slow mode and I can't navigate with mouse).
I looked through the log and it really appears to be an issue with Chrome. Here's the debug log that I enabled and allowed it to crash on its own rather than force to crash by clicking on check for update.

Check Windows system logs (Event Viewer).
Perhaps you will find other mistakes indicating the need to restore the system or an error code only for this program.

Thank you for the suggestion, unfortunately I don't understand it so I'd appreciate it if you could help me out. Here's what was written in the windows log:

Your knowledge was enough to provide information about the presence of an error.
0xc0000409 usually denotes damage to the files of the program or/and OS. It is quite difficult to find the exact cause.
Try basic recommendations that avoid reinstalling the OS. One of the articles:

No it just offers me the option to "close the program" (i just hit enter cause the PC goes into super slow mode and I can't navigate with mouse).
I looked through the log and it really appears to be an issue with Chrome. Here's the debug log that I enabled and allowed it to crash on its own rather than force to crash by clicking on check for update.
I do wonder, if the check for update triggers a crash in XMBC, and its not throwing the expected bug/crash detector, then maybe the problem is in the update checking thread... and of course, that happens automatically too (assuming check for updates is turned on). It might be worth disabling the automatic update check temporarily and see if it stops crashing...

Of course it might not be that - there could be two independent problems! It wouldn't do any harm to create a debug log and manually trigger the crash by checking for updates too - if they are different problems, it might help me narrow down that one!

Update checks make a system call to check DNS so its possible something in Windows DNS is messed up - but lets first try and diagnose/fix/detect the crash in XMBC because that shouldn't happen, no matter if there is a bigger problem elsewhere!

It's fixed now, thank you both for helping me out with this.
Seems disabling the check for updates option did the trick. It's not crashing anymore unless I manually prompt it to check for updates, I also tried running a log for it but it doesn't show anything special (seems to crash before it logs anything). As for DNS, I usually just use the default 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 BUT due to the internet situation in Iran I have to use a VPN (V2ray) which changes the system proxy. However, seeing as it's working now with the "check for new version every" option disabled, I guess it might be related to that, so maybe worth looking into?

Either way, I appreciate both your help with this. My mouse is super good, it's just the middle mouse click that's not working so I've bound it to the side buttons; would've been a real shame if I had to throw it way cause I couldn't get XMBC to work.

I suppose it may be an issue with the DNS situation in Iran... Not sure - either way it shouldn't cause XMBC to crash (so I would like to fix that at least!!).
What happens if, you open a command line prompt (cmd.exe) and type....

nslookup <return>
set type=txt <return>
xmbc.highrez.co.uk <return>

That's effectively all the update check does - curious to see the result.
I get this... (obv. that's using my internal DNS server, not 8.8.8.8 / 1.1.1.1 but you should get a similar result (text = "02200100"))
I wonder if its assuming it got a result when it didn't, but still using/trying to parse it (that would make some sense regarding a crash!)!

I've sent you an email - I think I have found the problem - if you can try the updated 2.20.1 build I emailed you and let me know that would be good.
I'm going to be away for the rest of the day now (will monitor emails on my mobile!).
