XMouse + Win7 64 + AutoCad = crash

Post by phoulx »

Phil your XMouse combined with the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 3 has been a huge help for my arm pain, my new pain is getting it to work in Win7. On my old XP machine, everything was fine. On my new computer with Vista Ultimate 64, everything was fine. Now the Vista machine has been upgraded to Windows 7 64 and my Autocad experiences fatal crashes 2-3 times per week with XM 1.49 and now XM 1.50. After much troubleshooting I am convinced it is the mouse.

So, in Autocad, I left-click the Open command from the default button bar, 2 or 3 times a week I'll get "FATAL ERROR: Unhandled e06d7363h Exception at *********" and Autocad is done. This is the only click/button combination that will cause this. I've been through several Windows and Autocad "fixes" that sounded promising but nothing has worked. When I uninstall and unplug the XMouse, I can not duplicate the problem after 100s of Opens. Additionally, there is quite a bit of Event Viewer info pointing to XMouse problems.

XMouse was originally installed under my user account which has administrator privileges, I've forced XMButtonControl.exe and XMButtonSvc.exe to run as administrator, I've changed them to run compatible with Vista SP2, I've unchecked Process Non-Client mouse messages and I'm still crashing.

Below are some error logs that lead me to believe there is something not installed/configured correctly. Thanks in advance.

XMouseButtonControl.log shows:

Hi,

Firstly this is a new one - I've been using XMBC for ages on Win7 x64 (but I don't have Autocad).

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "uninstall and unplug XMouse"? Do you mean your using a different mouse or that you just unloaded XMBC? If you leave XMBC running and just disable it, does the problem go away?

Secondly, there is no force XMButtonControl.exe and XMButtonSvc.exe to run as administrator. The service (svc) will always run with full local system access - that's its job and it ensures it launches XMBC with the highest available privilege in the users session.

While I'm a little concerned about the log entries and messages, I don't think that they are related to this issue...

However, The log: Received message with data 0x201 for another instance of X-Mouse Button Control. suggests that XMBC is already running then something (maybe the service) is attempting to launch it. I guess this is why you see the errors in the event log too (because it can not launch the program)

Its normal for the system/application event logs to say "The description for Event ID xxxx from source XMouseButton Launcher cannot be found." but it shouldn't matter - the bit after The following information was included with the event: is the important bit...

The Process token open Error: 6 is suspicious... open task manager, do you have a process (or several) called explorer.exe ??? This is what XMBC looks for to get the user session details. Its possible to not have this - but rather unusual. If you do have it, then something is odd. Do you have UAC enabled or disabled? What is the primary OS language you are using? It might be related to the compatibility / admin settings so could you undo those changes and see what event log messages you get?

To rule out the service... Stop it (disable it maybe) and then close XMBC... Then run XMBC from the start menu... See if the problem goes away or not.

Anyway, all that aside, it smells more like an autocad issue - maybe autocad has a problem with mouse hooks, or a timing issue when XMBC intercepts the clicks.... Have you got the left button set to anything specific or is it "Nothing don't intercept". have you got an application specific profile for autocad and if so, does the problem go away if you disable it?

For what its worth, the ignore non-client messages option is new. When ticked it is enabled. To mimic previous behaviour (prior to 1.50) if should NOT be ticked. I presume the problem still occurs when this is not ticked?

Sorry I cant offer any hard solution - but as I say, this is new one to me.
I will wait for some answers to my (many) questions before I try any more thinking :)

Thanks,
Phil

First, I disabled XM (still crashed), then completely uninstalled it and unplugged the Evoluent Mouse and put in a standard MS Mouse. From here, I could not reproduce the crash even after opening 200+ drawings. With XM & Evoluent mouse it would crash after 10-20 open commands.

In the C:\Program Files\Highresolution Enterprises\X-Mouse Button Control folder, I right-clicked on those two exe files, properties, compatibility. There I checked the boxes Run This Program As Administrator and Run This Program In compatibility Mode For Windows Vista Service Pack 2. Neither had been checked before.

I do see this in the Event Viewer when restarting, related?
Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

Explorer.exe is running (once). UAC is set to Never Notify. Windows Ultimate 7. Our server is Server 2003 SP2.

I disabled and closed XMBControl (XMBSvc still running) and it crashed. Disabled XMBSvc it crashed. I notice XMB Launcher service is still listed but is Stopped.

I'll try a couple more tricks here to see if I can narrow it down further. Thanks!

OK two simple q's....

If you use XMBC with the MS mouse, does it crash?
If you use the Evoluent mouse without XMBC running does it crash?

I wouldn't have thought the mouse hardware would make any difference but I want to rule that out!
I've never used an Evoluent mouse but I struggle to see how it might cause "unrelated" applications to go wrong - then again I also struggle to see why XMBC would do this.

To me, it sounds more likely to be an autocad /win7 problem than an xmouse problem - but to be honest, neither seems to make any sense to me.

EDIT:

I also see such messages but I'm pretty certain its nothing to do with XMBC or its service - esp. given the registry keys it mentions.

Thanks,
Phil

Phil, it looks like it's NOT the mouse/Xmouse after all. I started from scratch again and the MS Mouse with MS Mouse driver DID cause the same crash. Previously I had opened 200+ files without a crash so I thought the Microsoft mouse was fine. Clearly that was not the case and I'll have to search elsewhere for the cause of the crash. I will say that when running XMBC, the crash happens more frequently. I'd say once out of 20-30 Opens vs 70-100 opens without XMBC. This could be a fluke as well though.

FYI, the official Autodesk response is "We don't support ACAD 2009 on Windows 7". So I'm off on my own to solve this.

Thanks for your time and brain!

Thanks for the update, I'm glad to hear that its not just XMBC.

It sounds like some sort of timing issue - maybe some software is introducing a delay that effects autocad - but that wont be easy to diagnose :(

Good luck in your attempts to further diagnose/fix this (unfortunately I think you might need it). Don't you just love it when big companies that charge a small fortune for their products don't support the latest tech :(

Hi I use Civil 3D 2010 and Civil 3D 2011 and I'm getting major crashes too. I use the Orthovia mouse.
I did have the Intellipoint software installed. I uninstalled that and I keep and have got the following
errors over and over after and before the install. Please help. I have win 7 64bit fully loaded.

Here are my event view errors:

1.
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the XMouseButton Launcher service.

2.
The description for Event ID 0 from source XMouseButton Launcher cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

Whats crashing?

Those messages you mention are quite normal and normally nothing to worry about.
phoulx seems to think his problem is related with autocad and not specifically XMBC (the crashes happen without XMBC running - all be it less frequently) so its sounds like a timing conflict within autocad rather than with XMBC.

Thanks,
Phil
