XMBC frequently resets to default settings randomly. Re-install of XMBC restores my settings. Worked fine for months before the problem started.

That's certainly odd and not something I have seen... XMBC stores its settings in an xml settings file (somewhere under your user profile by default). You can load and save other profiles, which get saved as XMBCS files - which if you double click, will open in XMBC (thus changing your settings) but I guess you are not doing that!

When the settings are reset, do you loose all application profiles? or is it specific settings?

Are there anything (errors/warnings) in the log file - there probably wont be much as by default logging is minimal. You might like to turn on debug logging and when it randomly resets the settings again send me a copy of the log, ideally highlighting the time at which the reset occurred (roughly). Note that debug logging will turn itself off once XMBC restarts!

Thanks,
Phil

It resets to the mouse's original button functions, but as soon as I reload XMBC, hit finish, it changes to my chosen setting with no setting adjustment needed, so it appears to save my profile. It just turns itself off.
I'm not computer literate enough to know how to turn on debug logging.

Ah OK, so its like XMBC is exiting/crashing or simply being disabled - causing the mouse buttons to not be re-mapped.
If its crashing or exiting, then the XMBC icon (in the system tray, to the right of the taskbar by the clock) will go away until you re-load it?
If its being disabled, the icon will change from a white mouse icon to a grey mouse icon with a little red X in it.

NOTE: the icon may be hidden in the extended system tray - in which case, the little up ^ arrow to the left of the icons in the system tray should show it.

To turn on debug logging, in XMBC, hit the settings button and then on the "Updates and logging" tab, you can turn it on there. Debug logging only stays on until next time XMBC is run (or you turn it off manually). You can also open the log file from that tab. Turn it on, hit OK and APPLY, wait for it to go wrong, then <run XMBC again> open up the log file and copy and paste it here, or PM/email the whole log file to me as an attachment.

I am rather busy at the moment - most of my weekends are all booked up, but I will try and find some time to look into the log if you can get it to me!

Thanks,
Phil

Hi, unfortunately the log does not tell me much at all without debug logging enabled. There is nothing obvious there...
Debug logging is much more verbose!

I turned on De-bugging.
The icon now has a red dot behind it, but is still working fine.

Yes, the red indicates debug is enabled!
Bear in mind, next time XMBC restarts, debug will be off again - lets hope it stops working quickly and the log proves useful!

N0 worries. Thanks.
I discovered this morning that after the settings revert back to factory if I open the XMBC icon in the system tray, and it remains maximized on the screen, my settings come back, but once you minimize the icon back to the tray it goes bad again. Re-install fixes it every time and retains my settings.

Just curious, rather than reinstall, if you exit XMBC (right click the icon in the system tray and select exit) then rerun it again from the start menu, does that "fix" your missing settings (I bet it does)?

To me, it sound like the mouse hook is getting removed by something else - and that means XMBC wont see the buttons and cant remap them. Restarting should fix that - disabling and re-enabling (can also be done on the right click menu on the XMBC systray icon) should also fix that - if thats the case, then we need to find out what is removing the mouse hook. Other programs can use their own hooks which can interfere with XMBC, and Windows can remove hooks that take too long (timeout) which can happen if your hook timeout is too low which by default it may be.

Unfortunately your trimmed log did not tell me the hook timeout - you can check this on the advanced settings tab in XMBC - if it is less than 2000ms (2sec) then try increasing it to 5000ms or 10000ms. NOTE This change wont come into effect until you reboot so OK/Apply the change then reboot and then see if the problem goes away.

Thanks,
Phil

I tried disabling it then re-abling it and that works get everything right again.

The hook timeout seems to be at 1000ms, I'll try changing it to 5000ms.

OK, let me know how that goes.
If it helps, you can setup a global hotkey to toggle XMBC disable/enable via the keyboard (e.g. CTRL+SHIFT+E) to make things a bit quicker, but I would like to get to the bottom of this - as we are narrowing it down!
