Hi all,
I recently came across this program after searching on Google. My original problem was I bought a 7 button mouse called '7D Cruiser Transformer 2 II Usb Optical Gaming Mouse 6 Buttons CS CF WOW RAZER' off ebay. Cheaper than buying a razor. When it arrived the back and forward buttons were not where I would expect them to be (back was furthest away from me and forward closest to me); so hence why I got this program.
PROBLEM:
After installing the program it worked fine and I only changed 2 options (making button 4 and 5 the back and forward settings).
However after a shutdown and then reboot this morning I noticed that the icon disappear. In fact I can't even see the process 'XMouseButtonControl.exe' running when I open task manager.
I then ran the application (starting a new task within task manager) with the same result. It just doesn't open/run at all. I also tried to run it from the start menu with the same result.

Advent Keyboard (multi-media controls but Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard driver 5.1.2600.5512) - From an Advent Desktop 3511.
Mouse 7 button (standard dirver = HID-compliant mouse, 5.1.2600.0 - Microsoft)
OS = Windows XP Pro 32 bit (5.1.2600 (WinXP RTM)) - Up to date with all latest updates (inc sp3)
I also have AquaSnap 1.6.3, Emit (latest), Teamviewer (v8 latest) which all run in the system tray upon booting up. Thought it might be AVAST (free anti virus) causing it but turned it off and the problems above still existed.

Firstly, let me thank you for providing all the relevant information - a refreshing change
No, having said that, this is very odd. XMBC v2.5 on Windows XP should create an entry in your start menu's "startup" folder so the program should run when you log in to your OS. There re options to hide the icon, but I'm assuming you haven't checked that (and in any case you would see the process running in the task manager).
I guess the main option open to me is to look for the log file and see a) if it created, and b) if it gives any reason for the program opening and closing again (or crashing - although the crash dump is a little bit lacking right now).
Normally I would ask you to check the log file using the context menu in the system tray but as XMBC isn't running, have a search in you user profile folder for XMouseButtonControl.log - I cant remember exactly where it is in XP but its there somewhere. Send me the log and maybe (with a little luck) it will give some clue as to why its not running as expected.

Hi,
It has created a start menu item in startup. I've even double checked in msconfig and it is ticked.
I'll dig out the log. Also it is correct I didn't set it too hide the icon.

Well it looks like it is crashing when it tried to hook the mouse. I dont yet know why that could be.
Can you try running XMBC from the command line with the /Debug switch - that will force debug logging from startup which might give a little more info as to how far it gets.
Something like this:
C:\Program Files\Highresolution Enterprises\X-Mouse Button Control>XMouseButtonControl.exe /Debug
Then send the last entry in the log file
If that does not work, I will perhaps have to add more debugging to try and determine exactly where its crashing. Do you have any other utilities that may have hooked the mouse messaging system?

I meant to open a command prompt, but you can do it just as well from the RUN window from the start menu (or WIN+R):
From the run window, type the following (including the quotes)
"C:\Program Files\Highresolution Enterprises\X-Mouse Button Control\XMouseButtonControl.exe" /Debug
Or from a command prompt (run cmd.exe or find it on the start menu - I cant remember where it is exactly in XP!)

After using the command above within Run, the program starts fine! It even appears in my task manager.

I'll try putting that command as the target for the shortcut and see if it starts fine then as well. Will get back toi you with my findings on that but hopefully the above is useful never the less.

After restarting from changing the 'start menu > startup > XmouseButton' shortcut target from ""C:\Program Files\Highresolution Enterprises\X-Mouse Button Control\XMouseButtonControl.exe" /notportable" .... to ""C:\Program Files\Highresolution Enterprises\X-Mouse Button Control\XMouseButtonControl.exe" /Debug" ... it starts up fine. However the log file will obviously become very large after time; not that this is too much of an issue.

Oh that's just typical. OK so whatever it is, its probably a timing issue if it works with the slow logging and not without it. This often seems to be the case with these tricky ones 
If you can get away with it, then fine, but the logging does slow things down a lot, sometimes to the extent that you notice the mouse lagging.
I think the log file may have some auto-truncate in it (I cant remember but I usually try and do that sort of thing!).
I wonder, it might be worth trying 2.6 beta (see sticky topic at the top of the forum) as I added a few more log statements around the hook procedure to aid this sort of debugging (your not the first that has had it crash as this point). You might find it behaves better without logging, or that it actually gives enough information to figure out the problem. There have also been lots of little fixes and improvements in this area and I haven't yet rules out the possibility that I've actually fixed it (hahaha). I'm hoping to release 2.6 fairly soon but it would be very useful to know if it makes any difference to your problem.

Thanks, that would be good.
FYI you dont need to un-install an older version before installing the newer one. It should always "upgrade" to the newer version (effectively it will do an uninstall in the background)./

Thanks for that. I prefer uninstall > restart > install method personally lol.
Installed 2.6 and it is working no problems. Log file is still being created even though in settings I've told it not to (i.e. it's unticked) ... the shortcut in the startup folder is still "/notportable" rather than the debug.

That is good news
The log file is always created (you can disable it completely via the command line nut not thought the settings - and its not advised!), its just the level of detail in the log file that is restricted unless you enable debug logging.
I will have to check what the entry that says "Unable to enable secure attention sequence" means its probably something for WIndows 7/8 that does not apply on XP - and therefore not a problem.
