Well its been a while and Im still using a custom service to launch XMBC. However, the proper way to do it is to use this Windows Task Scheduler, to run XMBC at logon, with full administrative rigths in the user session.
There has recently been some talk of this for other programs. Some says its a hack around UAC but actually, I believe its doing exactly what is is intended to do. You need admin rights to add such a task, and it then runs as administrator, in the standard users session. It will have the correct registry access and therefore the correct settings too which my service messes up completely!
