Fair enough, I did similar, except I cloned win7 to a VHD that I added to the boot menu (which was pretty neat) but tbh, Eve not really looked back, I did install start8 but other than that I like WIn 8 and its speed :)

mmm, I installed "classic shell" at first when I tested a preview, but I'm learning to live with no start button, especially as I'm a heavy keyboard user with many pre-configured key combos. I don't have much use for the tiles though, at least until I get that new Logitech TouchPad they're showing on the UK site (£70, ouch)

I thought that too and was doing OK, until I started using remote desktop, when not fullscreen, hitting those hot corners is really difficult, and the full screen , constantly changing start menu is useless on a slow connection :( It seems MS forgot about that!

I started with classic shell in the CP but it just doesn't cut it compared to win7 start menu, start8 is far superior lol (even if it cost me $4 lol)

Use ultraVNC for remote access :) But yeah, the hot corners are fiddly on a dual-monitor system too (hint: Win-C). But again, I can duplicate hot-corners etc with keypresses

And if you install XMBC 2.6 beta 1, you can do it with mouse buttons too :)
I haven't got WIN+X working though for some reason (one of the troubles I think)

win-x is a system key-combo in 8, it duplicates the lower-left hotspot, that's why:

http://www.ghacks.net/2012/08/12/edit-t ... windows-8/

I reconfigured an xmouse button to ctrl-win-x to replace it's old win-x combo (brings up a 3rd-party macro menu, yadder yadder <g>)

Dear Lord man, just read your hardware profile, that's some setup :) And then I saw a "Trust BT mouse". TRUST, REALLY :) ?

Yes but XMBC should be able to do system key combos. The ALT+TAB option that worked in win 7 doe snot work in Win 8 either - it seems MS have secured it more - I got it to work after digitlly signing XMBC (self signed) and setting UIAceess true in the manifest - but thats not good for everyone else (as I cant afford >$80 a year on official certs :( )

Still looking into that though.

Hmmm, I can understand signed drivers for XM's 64-bit build (maybe), but you didn't have to sign the driver in 7 did you ? I'll ask around about the reserved-keys issue, I know some people, might get lucky

no, and its not a driver. If it were a driver then sure I'd accept it - but its not :)

Autohotkey suffers the same problem... eg: http://www.autohotkey.com/board/topic/8 ... windows-8/.

Its clearly by design - as to if there is a way around it, I dont know yet - maybe I will just have to pay up, but its not that simple, it will still only work in the programfiles/system32 folders, so portable users will be out of luck!!!

However, if you do find anything, please let me know.

if you have to pay up the forum should darn well chip in (I have once, but not nearly as much as your great app is worth, you might have got 2 pints at your local for what I donated <g>))

People do chip in - and it would probably cover it to be honest, but to get certs you have to be vetted and it just sounds like hassle 0- providing passport and utility bills etc. but what really gets me is the cost, and the fact you have to keep renewing it.

Before I do that, I want to make sure there are no alternatives!
