XMBC 2.6 Beta

Post by phil »

OK, I have begun the next beta phase with XMBC v2.6 Beta 1.

There are only a few changes so far (I plan much more but my time has been very limited recently - sorry about that!)

The initial beta fixes a few things that have been reported since I release v2.5 and adds some extra actions for Windows 8.
It also includes some more language packs that have been supplied since version 2.5 was released.

You can get the beta HERE. Note that this link will always get you the latest beta version!

Changes since v2.5:
  • 163: Fixed some language translation errors (miss-spelt English phrases!)
  • 159: Added option to bring window to foreground when scrolling
  • 164: Added new actions for Windows 8
  • 158: Modified the service to better launch XMBC when sometimes it would fail previously
EDIT: It seems #159 is not working as expected. Windows intentionally stops apps from stealing focus, so unless XMBC is active, this new option does not work properly :(

Thanks,
Phil

Cool!

Is always nice to see active development on loved apps :D

One thought: with the 159, Added option to bring window to foreground when scrolling, if i recall correctly, windows has an option to focus the windows that is under cursor after a certain delay. Wouldnt that be the bug with this?

I dont see how #159 could interfere with that windows functionality, but the fix for #159 is not working properly anyway, because XMBC does not have permission to bring other windows to the foreground and I cant figure out a way of bypassing that (it works fine under the debugger but not once its released) so I suspect that option wont hang around for much longer!

There is an option in windows to bring windows under the cursor to the front - I dont know about a short delay, oh and this option is not easily accessible - TweakUI used to access it but that has gone - maybe XMBC will access it so its easy to turn on and off/configure.

Hi. In the version of XMBC 2.5 I have a glitch. If you close the program to the system tray, you can not change the language of the keyboard. When you press Shift + Alt in the system tray, the language changes, but the data entry is the language, which was before program before closing XMBC. After restarting the computer, everything works as before. Operating System Windows 7 32 bit. Input Language Russian, English. Thanks for the program!

Hi Borland,

I'm not sure I completely understand what your reporting, but I don't use multi-language windows very often so I will have a look and see if I can reproduce this when I'm next playing with XMBC.

In the future, please start a new thread for new bugs, especially if there in a different version to this thread!
This thread is for testing v2.6

Thanks,
Phil

Hello,

I have a strange issue.

I have enabled "Hide" for the XBMC tray icon. However everytime I restart my computer the tray icon comes back again.

Is this a bug?

I am running the latest beta on Windows 7 SP1 64 Bit

Thanks

XMBC 2.6 Beta 2

Post by phil »

Sorry for the delay guys, I'm really struggling to fins time for XMBC these days.
Here is 2.6 Beta 2, with a few bug fixes and better windows 8 support.

A major change now for those with Vista or newer is the removal of the Windows Service (XMouse Launcher Service). This is because it was breaking several rules for Windows 8 apps, causing certain features not to work (like ALT-TAB). The program is now signed as a user accessibility tool (using a private certificate because I cant afford lots of money to buy an official one). The certificate is installed along with XMBC so it can be trusted. NOTE: For this to work, the program has to be installed to your program files folder, which is the default, but it does mean that these "secure" features wont be available in portable mode (Thank Microsoft for that :))

You can get the beta HERE. Note that this link will always get you the latest beta version!

Changes since v2.6 Beta 1:
  • 169 - Fixed settings file name corruption in German windows.
  • 168 - Fixed scrolling on the index tab in CHM help file windows. This also allows you to set custom button profiles for Windows 8 Modern UI apps but some more work is needed there.
  • 167 - Fixed a bug causing the 'sticky' click drag modifiers not to work on a layer that was active due to a modifier key.
  • 165 - Fixed ALT+TAB in Windows 8 by signing the XMBC executable and removing the XMBC Launcher Service
FYI: I had pretty much given up on issue #159 introduced in Beta 1 (activate window under the cursor) because Windows keept blocking XMBC from doing that. However with the changes for #165, it might just be working...

Let me know how you get on, especially with the new launch procedures in Vista and later.

Thanks,
Phil

First problem with 2.6 beta 2, the installer does not correctly put a link in the startup folder in the start menu!
I will fix that later but for now you can manually copy it from the XMBC folder to the startup folder.

Thanks,
Phil

Actually is there anyway you could make it so XBMC can start up with windows with out have XBMC showing in the start menu?

A lot of software can start up with windows without adding it to the start up folder. I believe it's done in the windows register instead?

Yes its possible to do it that way... I'm not sure which way I prefer, probably the registry -- thats probably easier anyway! I dont know why I didn't use the registry before (its been added to the startup menu option for ages on pre-vista machines).

Now I dont need the service, I can add it to the registry and maybe have a toggle in the settings to turn it on/off - but one problem with that is if I put it in local machine, you need admin permissions to write there, and if I put it in current user, it wont auto-start for other users until they load XMBC and turn it on....

Thanks,
Phil

FYI: I've refreshed the 2.6 Beta 2 installation to fix the missing short-cut.
There are no other functional changes.

I've made a few more little fixes and uploaded 2.6 Beta 3....

You can get the beta HERE. Note that this link will always get you the latest beta version!

Changes since v2.6 Beta 2:
  • #170 - Added 'System Menu' action for Windows 8 (not available in portable mode).
  • #171 - Fixed issues in settings dialog dropdown lists caused by #168
  • #172 - Fixed scrolling in Visual Studio debugger text/xml/html visualiser window(s)
  • #175 - Added discrete mouse button down and up commands to simulated keystrokes.
Instead of {LMB} use {LMBD} for Down/Press {LMBU} for UP/Release (same for MMB, RMB, MB4, MB5 etc. NOTE: This is not currently 'documented'
  • MISC - Improved thread synchronisation code to try and reduce lockups/crashes
Let me know how you get on, especially with the new launch procedures in Vista and later.

Thanks,
Phil

Well of course, beta 3 broke something (scrolling in remote desktop windows) so I've sorted that and uploaded 2.6 Beta 4....

You can get the beta HERE. Note that this link will always get you the latest beta version!

Changes since v2.6 Beta 3:
  • #172 - Reworked to fix scrolling in Visual Studio debugger text/xml/html visualiser window(s) and not break others like remote desktop!
  • #173 - Fixed scrolling in some OLD VB6 dropdown controls.
Once again, keep me updated of any new/re-occuring issues.

Thanks,
Phil

OK here is 2.6 Beta 5.

A few more fixes. One related to input language, so anyone on NON English, please test this for me. I hope I havn't broken anything but if you notice sim-keys not working or strange things happening with input language selection let me know!

Test things like COPY/PASTE/UNDO actions please which all use sim keys behind the scenes but play with keyboard layouts to make sure the correct shortcuts are sent.

As usual, you can get the beta HERE.

Changes since v2.6 Beta 4:
  • #156 - Fixed bug causing Invert Scroll to fail if left or right mouse button held down.
  • #166 - FixedProblem with multi-language systems, unable to switch language & US English gets auto-installed on Win 8.
Once again, keep me updated of any new/reoccurring issues.

Thanks,
Phil
