Tap to Click

Sorry if this is a silly question, can't find it in the FAQ or elsewhere.

Very simply, is it possible to use X-Mouse to implement a tap to click conversion, for example tap left on a mouse (e.g. Magic Mouse) to signal a mouse left click? I can't find the facilty anywhere for Windows although Apple have it courtesy of BetterTouchTool.

Sorry I'm confused... Are you talking about a touchpad?
Surly when you "tap" a mouse button it does click?

What is the difference between a tap and a click?

Yes, there is a difference on some mice (... and yes, I do mean mice not trackpads). For example, on the Magic Mouse (using this Apple mouse on a Windows 'bootcamp' partition of an Apple laptop), the click is a more ponderous physical depression of the mouse's top surface, a tap is just a finger hit on the same surface with no physical movement of the mouse. The former is more suitable for eureka moments, the latter for higher frequency use.

In that situation, using a Magic Mouse in bootcamp, X-Mouse does intercept signals for (physical) clicks - and also for swipes which are wheel substitutes. It would be a great leap forward for many Mac users who partition to use both Windows and Mac if they can use the same mouse & protocols, hence my question - unashamedly selfish but globally there must be tens of thousands like me ...

I don't think your the first with this device, but unfortunately, if the mouse driver does not send the messages through to windows, then there is little I (XMBC) can do. XMBC simply remaps windows messages so if no windows message is generated, then it cant remap it!

It sounds like its going to require driver support (from Apple????) all I can say is good luck with that one

Having said that, it might be quite a useful device for my virtual Mac OSX Lion/iPhone development!

Hi Phil,

I think I've found a workaround using your current X-Mouse version.

By using the X-Mouse Setup menu as means of seeing what signals are being registered, I found that the swipes for left and right wheel tilt are being received. Since these gestures can be made at the front of the Magic Mouse, it's possible to redefine them and use them as left and right clicks. (... I never use wheel tilt anyway).

Whilst there's a slight difference between a swipe and a tap, it's much less than their difference with the Magic Mouse's necessarily more ponderous click.
