Please help translation XMBC to your language?

Hi everyone,

I have finally gotten round to adding foreign language support to XMBC.
Its all done using a translation text file. I did this so the community can help making their own translations (my languages are restricted to English, C++ & C# :))

See post below for the most recent template file. Its pretty simple format:

Comment lines are prefixed with #
The language definition/name (as displayed in the general settings tab) is specified as
Language=<name/description>

And then each string or phrase is defined as "English" => "Translation"

Take a look at the attached file and if its not clear what to do, ask me. You will need XMBC 2.4 Beta 5 or later to use this functionality. Once installed, you can double click the file to open/install it into XMBC, or just copy it to the same folder as your XMBCSettings.XML file.

NOTE: any empty translations will be ignored and the English text used. If I have missed any strings/phrases let me know.
As people provide translations (send them to me or upload them here) I can include them in the distribution or on a dedicated page here.

Some time ago, I made a tool to help people translate the strings - it highlights any missing translations etc.
Thats available here: https://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/XMB ... ublish.htm

There is also a mailing list which I send to when there is a new translation template. You can subscribe to the list by sending an email with the subject "subscribe" to xmbctranslation {at} highrez (.) co (.) uk

Thanks,
Phil

Thank you - the first real sample I have :)

From this translation, I can see that the settings tab needs a little work on sizing so I will sort that in the next beta. I'm planning on putting the translations onto a website when I release v2.4. When you are closer to 100% happy with it let me know and I will add it to the list (well it will probably be the first on the list :))

I may well add some languages to the installation so they are installed by default, but that probably wont happen until after 2.4 when more translations arrive.

Thanks,
Phil

Hi everyone.

I have just pushed out 2.4 Beta 11. There are a few extra translation keys, and one or two small changes to existing keys. There is a new template file in the beta thread, I have marked the changes with: # -- Updated in 2.4 Beta 10 --

I will try not to make any more changes to the language pack prior to release - but if I do I will try and label them so its easy to update your existing translations.

Thanks,
Phil

I have just pushed out 2.4 Beta 12. There are a few extra translation keys, and one or two small changes to existing keys. There is a new template file in the beta thread.

I have, in beta 12, increased the size of the dialogs to accommodate more text in the foreign translations. Its still not ideal (i.e. auto-sized) but should play better with longer strings.

Once again I have tagged the changes with the comments:

# -- Updated in 2.4 Beta xx --
# -- Added in 2.4 Beta xx --

Thanks for your patience and help with the translations (well the one so far :)).
Hopefully I wont have to make any more changes but during the beta process I cant promise :)

Hi! I'm Japanese and have downloaded language_template.xmbclp for v2.4 Beta 14.
As I'm trying to translate it into Japanese, I've noticed somethings might be strange about it.
Please let me report them here.

--Keys might be missing
#Global settings: Advanced settings
"Above normal" => ""
"Below normal" => ""
"High" => ""
"Normal" => ""
"Realtime" => ""

#Global settings: Hotkey tab
"Global hotkeys are disabled when in the settings dialog. You have to apply and close the settings before they will work." => ""

# Actions (displayed in the dropdown lists)
"Layer Modifier Revert" => ""

--keys seems to be not working
"Special function tags:\t{WAIT<n>} inserts a delay of <n> seconds.\r\n
\t\t\t{WAITMS<n>} inserts a delay of <n> milliseconds\r\n
\t\t\t{HOLD<n>} holds the next key down for <n> secconds.\r\n
\t\t\t{HOLDMS<n>} holds the next key down for <n> milliseconds.\r\n
\t\t\t{VKC:<n>} Sends the specified virtual key code\r\n
\t\t\t{EXT:<n>} Sends the specified extended virtual key code\r\n
\t\t\t{CLEAR} Clears any modifier tags (CTRL},{ALT} etc." =>

something else seems to be strange
"Switch to Layer &5 => "" #double quotes not closed
"&Invert mouse wheel scrolling" => ""InvertedHorzScrolling #string out of quotes(comment?)
\t\t\t{CLEAR} Clears any modifier tags (CTRL},{ALT} etc." #parentheses not corresponding

Unfortunately, Japanese language file is not completed enough to show...
Please let me know if there are MY mistakes etc...

Thanks!

#Choose Application dialog (custom window profile)
"Refresh" => ""
"Process Name" => ""
"Window Title" => ""

--keys might be missing for caption(title)
"About XMouse Button Control" => ""
"Simulated Keystrokes" => ""

--miss spell
secconds

Thanks again!

Firstly, have you got the latest template for v2.4, you can find it in the 2.4 beta thread. I had already noticed and fixed some of those issues.

I will have to check the rest out when I get home.

Edit: As for the miss-spelt words, that is probably miss-spelt in the current XMBC GUI too - I will have to fix both the template and the GUI - oops! :)

Thanks,
Phil

OK I had a look already :)
Your right about the missing keys:
"Above normal" => ""
"Below normal" => ""
"High" => ""
"Normal" => ""
"Realtime" => ""

They are missing. For all missing keys, you should be able to just add them, because XMBC should replace any GUI matches it finds in the template. If that does not work I will have to change the code - I'll let you know!

Of course its great that you let me know so I can update the template.

The rest:
  • "Switch to Layer &5 => "" #double quotes not closed
    Yes, it should be terminated with a "
  • "&Invert mouse wheel scrolling" => ""InvertedHorzScrolling #string out of quotes(comment?)
    Cut/Paste error - its not a comment and it should not exist! In v2.4 Beta 14 everything outside of the "" should be ignored anyway - you can put a " in the text by escaping it with \ (like C++)... so \"
  • \t\t\t{CLEAR} Clears any modifier tags (CTRL},{ALT} etc." #parentheses not corresponding
    This is part of a larger string. You havn't got word-wrap turned on have you?
  • --keys seems to be not working
    "Special function tags:\t{WAIT<n>} inserts a delay of <n> seconds.\r\n......
    This one requires investigation, aside from the miss-spelling which I will have to fix in a new beta!
Thanks,
Phil

OK I have been checking :)

The CPU priorities
"Above normal" => ""
"Below normal" => ""
"High" => ""
"Normal" => ""
"Realtime" => ""

Are all missing from the code - oops - sorry about that. I will fix it in Beta 15 (soon).

I will also fix all the missing items from the language pack and make sure the strange items you mentioned are fixed in either the language template and/or the code.

Thanks,
Phil

OK Another template update in 2.4 Beta 17

There are a 4 new language strings that I had missed when applying the translations for layer switching actions.

Almost there I hope :)
Thanks,
Phil

I have now released version 2.4 of XMBC.

So any language packs will be welcome here I'm sure. Eventually I will create a dedicated webpage for users to download language packs but I haven't not got enough time to to that in the next 2 weeks. Feel free to post new language packs here in this thread or in a new thread in the forums.

The installation already includes German by Quallo and Japanese by Prairial.

I have attached the final v2.16.1 language template in case anyone is interested.
language_template.xmbclp
Thanks for all the help testing the new language support and providing translations.
