Drop-down list of phrases/sentences?

Post by injtsvetkov »

Hello, I was wondering if it would be possible to use a mouse key to open up something like a drop-down menu with some words, phrases or even whole sentences which I frequently write and than left clicking the one that I need to be written. It sounds like some kind of advanced "Simulated Keys" function which actually allows me to chose a desired sequence to be executed from a pre-defined list of sequences.
Or maybe it would be much more convenient if the list shows up as the mouse button is pressed than I point to the desired sequence and it gets executed as the button is released.

I hope I was clear enough, my idea is to be able to see the list of words/phrases/sentences and pick the one you need. That way you don't need to memorize where each sequence is assigned.

As far as I can see, at the moment the only way to do such a thing is to assign each sequence to a different mouse button and a different layer which was exactly what I did at first (when the sequences were 5-6) but now they are around 15 and their number is increasing rapidly so I can hardly remember where each one is assigned which leads to a lot of mistakes and frustration, not to mention the shortage of buttons on my mouse which makes me constantly change layers and the confusion grows bigger.

So I figured that if it is possible to be made, such kind of "drop-down list" function would be helpful to a lot of people.

Thanks,
Iliya

Hi, someone else has requested the ability to create a menu that you can send custom commands or keys (words) from . Its on the todo list (it has been there a while) but maybe I can elevate its priority and see what I can do in the next version - we shall see.

Team? LOL!
XMBC is a hobby and all my own creation! (which is why some things take longer than some might wish!)

It seems to be a pretty time consuming hobby so I thought you might be sharing it with some friends :)

Hello, I would like this feature to be implemented too.
Remembering tons of button bindings for different programs is not easy for me.
I only have 1-2 most used button bindings for a few most used programs because I won't be able to remember anything more than that lol.

I use mouse gesture programs if more actions is needed.
Mouse gestures activate by drawing a symbol or character, therefore is easier to remember.
But even mouse gestures has its limitations (for me).
I set up to 10 actions for some programs, but end up using only a few of them, and forget about the others.

Showing a custom menu to select action from it eliminates the need to remember things completely.
The menu can also include actions that already has button bindings set up, and show the button binding on the menu.
This way, whenever I forgot about a button binding and use the menu instead, I also get reminded of the button binding at the same time, and maybe other button bindings I have set up but forgot about.

Also, it would be nice to have a keyboard shortcut to show the said menu, so I can trigger those actions when my right hand is on keyboard.

Thank you!

What a great idea! Actually I remember about all a hundred different simulated keystrokes I use both in Photoshop and Bridge every day in my work. But yes some I do not use so often then I think longer what should I click, or even I have to check out few buttons in XMBC panel to find that I wanted to use. Once problem arised when I didn't use XMBC for 2 months. When I was back to work I completely didn't know what to click to trigger some action. That was few hours horror to learn it again.

The way I see it could be implemented would be very similar to BUTTON HELD TIME DEPENDED ACTIONS. So instead of holding some button we could just click it to access menu with defined Simulated Keystrokes. In contrast to BHTDA we could have them as many as we set for certain button. So not all there are collected we earlier created but only chosen ones, those we want were displayed. To make things more firendly they would be shown as names, single user thought up to mirror keys sequence.

I really doubted there could be made something so powerful like BHTDA, Buttons Chording and Simulated Keystrokes. Now we can have 4th pillar to fully support our construction :)

I think this new expended (or dropdown) menu should cooperate with BHTDA, BCh. For ex. like now we can access Simulated Keystrokes by BHTDA, BCh, so we could call that menu as result of those functions too :D

That would be just perfect :D

That would be too massive. If I have for one application over 50 simulated keysrokes, where each is bound to some button (directly, BHDTA, BCh) that would not make things simpler. I would like more only some set of chosen earlier simulated keystrokes (displayed as assigned by enduser names) showed in such menu. But others may want all bindings to make them happy - that could be optional / exchangable with SKs after all.
