Problem in Minecraft due to XMBC

Post by Hupi » Sat Nov 23, 2019 12:04 am

XMBC Version: 2.18.8 Portable / 64bit
Windows Version: Win 10 Pro / 64bit / 1903 (latest updates installed)
Mouse Information (brand/model): Logitech G502
Relevant Computer Information (CPU, RAM etc): Ryzen 3900x / 64GB RAM
Did the problem occur after an upgrade of XMBC? (If so, from what version?): yes 2.17 Portable
Did the problem occur after a Windows update/upgrade? (If so, from what version?): no
How long have you used XMBC?: some years
What language and keyboard layout do you use in Windows?: German / Keyboard Swiss German

Clear description of the problem - try and include as much information as possible, including what button and mappings you are having problems with (if applicable).:

XMBC Settings I use:
Standard / Default Profile & Settings activated (no keys/buttons have been changed, all settings on default).
There is only 1 additional App configured (VLC media player / use mouse buttons 4 & 5 for changing to next/previous media in queue).
No specific settings made for Minecraft / Java in XMBC.

Problem:
If XMBC 2.18.8 Portable is running (active) when playing Minecraft, there is a random lag on the mouse wheel. The lag time is random (between 3 and 20 seconds). Therefore, changing the active item in the Minecraft toolbar (with the mouse wheel) is totally laggy.
Those lags I only experience in Minecraft and it should be easy to reproduced this behavior:
- The lags are completely gone when XMBC 2.18.8 Portable is set to inactive.
- The lags are back when XMBC 2.18.8 Portable is set to active again.
- When I use the older XMBC 2.17 Portable (active or inactive), the problem is not existing at all.
- The mouse drivers can't be the source of the problem. I tried the default windows driver and with the logitech drivers, but same result.

OK I don't play minecraft but I suppose I could throw it on my system to have a look. 3-20 seconds lag is immense - I cant think of any sane reason to lag for 20 seconds!!!! Its odd that this appears to be specific 2.18.x and fine in 2.17 - sounds like maybe something has crept in that shouldn't, but narrowing that down could be tricky!

Before I go down the route of trying minecraft here, a few suggestions for you to test...
  • In general settings, try disabling "Make scroll wheel scroll window under cursor" and see if that makes any difference.
  • Also make sure "Activate window when scrolling" is turned off.
  • Turn on debug logging - in the Updates and logging settings tab, OK and APPLY that, then go run Minecraft and hopefully capture some of this lag in the log - send me (PM/Email) the log and please make a note of the time when the lag occurs so I can find the relevant period to look at in the log file. If you could do the same from 2.17 then that would be even better - I hope the log entries will point me to the function/code that is lagging!
Please can you see if either of those two options make any difference and report back?

Regards,
Phil

Hi Phil,

thanks for the replay and suggestions. I did all the testing with the versions 1.17, 1.18.6 & 1.18.8 and could narrow down the problem further:
In general settings, try disabling "Make scroll wheel scroll window under cursor" and see if that makes any difference.
--> This makes no difference for all 3 tested versions.
Also make sure "Activate window when scrolling" is turned off.
--> This one solves the issue (or causes the problem).
--> In 1.17 and 1.18.6 it can be turned on without producing an issue/problem.
--> In 1.18.8 it must be turned off, or it produces the issue/problem.

Turn on debug logging - in the Updates and logging settings tab, OK and APPLY.
--> I did that for all tree versions. will send you the resulting files by IM/mail.

Thanks again for the support and the great XMBC program in general.

OK Thanks for that - the four logs were very useful - and I think I have found where the problem is.
So it should be fixed (back to how it was in 2.18.6 and earlier in the next release!

Thanks,
Phil

You can try the beta - just head over to the beta forum thread.
The beta only comes in installation mode (there is no portable version of betas although you can extract the EXE and DLL and make it portable if you need to - I cant remember if you are using the portable version or not).

Hi Phil,

I just re-tested with the "2.19 Beta 7" (64bit):

- Confirmed OK
- Works as in the pre-2.18.8 versions.
- "Activate window when scrolling" = ON or OFF has no impact anymore. Works again with both settings.

Good (I thought it would as I did test it in Minecraft myself - until the demo expired haha!)
